*Please* bottom post on this list.

You stated that you could boot into recovery mode previously... If it is
a clean install of Karmic then it should be using grub2. See:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2
for how to troubleshoot. If it was an upgrade to karmic & you are using
grub, see:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto
and if so, I'd recommend:
