Modem 3g HUAWEI E1756 on UBUNTU 10.04

I am trying to use a 3g modem on my new 10.04 box.

However, after following the installation procedure provided inside the
modem I have got an odd situation.

When using a terminal I can ping, resolve names and navigate using lyinx.

Firefox runs in offline and I can go in File->Work Offline and turn it
on-line again.

No other gnome app seems to find the connection - not even Network Config

If I run gnome-ppp I am able to connect the internet - but the same problem
persists.

Does someone have a clue?
