What is function of all the Alsamixer volume bars (sliders) precisely?

Hi,

What is the function of all the Alsamixer volume bars (sliders)
precisely?
On my IBM Thinkpad T43 I see the sliders
Master, Master Mono, Headphone, PCM, Line, CD, Mic, Phone, Aux. 
What is the function of the Alsamixer switches 
Mic Boost (+20d), Mic Select, Mono Output Sel, External Amplif and
Stereo Mic? 
I read /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.32/sound/pci/intel8x0.c but this source
code document is not comprehensible without additional texts.
I'd appreciate a block diagram that no doubt developers had in mind when
writing the /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.32/sound/pci/intel8x0.c source
code.
My multimedia audio controller is Intel 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6
family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev03).
