I am surprised you cannot get rid of the GUI customizations by deleting
the various config files and that you are forced to create a new account
solely to solve this problem. It has always worked for me. Here is what
I do:
1. Log out from the desktop GUI and go to a console (CTRL+ALT + F2, F3,
F4 ...)
2. backup or delete the following files from the home directories/files:
.gconf* .gnome* .kde* .qt* .dbus* .mcop* ... and others that you may
find pertinent.
3. Delete all files/directories from /tmp that belong to the user you
are trying to reset.
4. Log back in to the desktop (from CTRL+ALT+F6 or F7 login screen).
If you don't log out first, files from /tmp do not make some changes
persist. So all the above steps are necessary to reset your desktop.
If you have tried all these, however, and still weren't successful, then
perhaps things have changed in your version of the OS.
