I just substituted "root (hda0,8)" for the uuid line. The reason it
wouldn't boot with the uuid line may be that grub was generated when I
reinstalled 8.04 and it didn't recognize the uuid line (I *think*).

Upon further digging it looks like the "uuid..." line was instituted
with the 9.04 version. Prior to that it was "root (hda0,x)".
