These might be of interest/help:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/531027
[GLIB WARNING ** GLib - getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)]
worth the read, but has been marked as a duplicate of:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plymouth/+bug/532984
[Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 3 won't boot, with (process 239): GLib-WARNING **:
getpwid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0), on HP Compaq Pentium 4]
But that bug has been tagged invalid, which seems a bit odd to me due to
the amount of affected users.
