I had issues when updating a karmic to lucid w/nvidia-96. I opened
System|Administration|Hardware Drivers (after I managed to get into the
desktop (long story). I found that the driver was showing, but only
after I removed the driver from that (Jockey), then reinstalling from
that, and rebooting, the driver worked. You might want to try the same.
