Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+plus or minus on the numeric keypad after you
boot. This flips through available screen modes. You may need to try 2
or 3 times. Don't do it too quickly - leave at least a few seconds
between presses for your monitor to adjust and the screen to be
redrawn.
If this works, then you can change the resolution in Preferences | Display.
Also, install the nVidia drivers, which should auto-detect what modes
your screen can handle.
