I am glad to find that the Human theme can be installed on Lucid (sudo
apt-git install human-theme) and along with the edit in gconf-editor
mentioned elsewhere will happily show the buttons back where they
were.
As a matter of interest, if I am using the Human theme on Karmic and
(eventually) upgrade to Lucid (upgrade rather than new install) will
it keep the human theme? I know that my elderly relative will not
like the new theme due to the narrow border, which makes window
resizing tricky for those with imperfect hand control, and also will
not like the moved button position.
