Maybe gedit doesn't open the files because they are too big? What does 
the file command tell you about the file type? The .sh extension may be 
used because they are probably made like the graphics driver for nvidia 
cards which is a shell script with an appended archive. The script knows 
where the binary archive part starts and unpacks the archive from there.
