If you want to learn how to program, and you want to learn it on Ubuntu, 
then it appears that the "official" Ubuntu recommendation is Python.

Another nice language to learn is Java, and one you know Java, C# 
(sharp, not shart) will look very similar.

Of course every programming language can interact with the mysql DB. 
Because it is "just" SQL. You do know SQL, don't you? If not, please 
give that an effort too. Basic concepts like normalization should at 
least ring a bell if you want to be an efficient programmer.
