CPU usage at 97-98% with not alot running

Hi all,

I have been experiencing a slow system for a couple of days now, I initially put it down to graphics issue but now i am not so sure!

having reinstalled my nvidia driver, and still experiencing the problem i looked a bit deeper and when i opened the system monitor is shows my cpu at 97-98% with only ktoorrent and amsn running (and system monitor of course!). the only thing showing in system monitor as using cpu power is ktorrent with a value of 1.

I am running 9.10 karmic on a athlon 3200+ cpu with nvidia geoforce 5200+ pci graphics card and 1.5 gb ram.

when playing 3d games such as foobillards on the system in question (my favourite pool sim) the sound is also out of sync badly to the extent that i break the pack open line up the next shot and the sound of my first shot is played!

this started at appropriately the same time as the kernel upgrade to 2.6.31-20 generic maybe just a coincidence i dont know! 

thanks in advance for any light you can throw on this puzzle (if it was windows i'd swear i had a bug of some kind but this is ubuntu!!)
