9:10 blank screen

I have a Acer aspire 3000 with sis 661/741/760 video card.  After an  
update I started getting a blank screen instead of the usplash screen. I  
run sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-sis to up date the drivers.  
Still black screen at times, held delete down at usplash start, results  
(usplash mode 1152x864 failed, usplash using 1024x768). Then I run sudo  
nano /etc/usplash.conf and it has 1280X854 as the resolution, also says  
these parameters will only apply after running update-initramfs.  I have  
not been able to figure out how to udate-initramfs.  Also it is a dual  
boot with Windows XP.
