system hangs at login

Hi, I just loaded ubunto9.10 with the Gnome desktop.  Load was great, no
problems, good color sharp crisp full screen windows.  

 

I take out the disk, hit return, and the system reboots.  Login screen comes
up, test login by logging in with wrong passwd.  I get a beep and return to
login screen.

 

I then login with real user and passwd.  The system then hangs; mouse
doesn't move screen does not change.

 

Any ideas?
