The first thing that I would recommend is to add more memory. 8.04 will
install with 256Mb, but only with the AlternateCD. The liveCD requires
384Mb:

256Mb will be slow as molassas even with a 3Ghz cpu. Minimum that I
would recommend is 384MiB, but your machine will take up to 2Gb, so
spend a bit & upgrade the memory to the most you can afford and the most
the machine will take first.
9.04 & 9.10 should install from the liveCD with 256Mb, but it will take
a long time to install due to the limited memory. Again, upgrade your
memory first.
Keep in mind that 9.04 will 'end-of-life' in October of this year, so I
wouldn't bother installing that version. See:
