Update 9.04 to 9.10 loses sound

I have tried installing xfce alongside gnome but I still cannot get any 
sound capabilities from any software under Gnome or Xfce, yet I have 
a separate partition on the same hardware with the KDE desktop and
there is no problem with sound at all.

So the only solution I can come up with, if it is a solution ;) is to install 
KDE alongside Gnome, switch to using KDE to boot into if I want to use 
the sound features of Ubuntu Linux.

I'd like to use Gnome instead of KDE but sound capabilities are essential.
