how to add new kernel under Ubuntu ?

Sorry, my bad, you need to copy the kernel and initrd to /boot/.
( I am booting off a dedicated 'first grub' distinct and separate from 
the OS boot, and there's no need to copy over to the first grub /boot/ 
for grub2).

But still, as long as you modify the /boot/grub/grub.cfg (just like you 
modify the /boot/grub/menu.lst for grub-legacy), there should be no problem.
