??? Vista most probably boots off sda2 and does not need anything from
sda1...but then who knows what idiotic stuff the manufacturer put in.

Do you first see grub on boot up? If not, hit F8 before Vista starts to
boot for safe mode or something to find out why Vista won't boot. That's
your problem right, Vista won't boot?

What do you want to achieve here? Recover Vista or recover files?
