NFS, Why so slow?

So how does it work when the router is set to channel 13 and I have 2
computers with wifi? I see that my desktop is now on channel 13 and
getting 88% link quality which is way better (thanks all). But then
the second computer is also no that frequency? That would seem to mean
that you get half the bandwidth and it is stupid. My flakey laptop
will not boot so I can't check what it IS doing.
