  I knew my phone was middle because any time we got a call my wireless 
dropped cold.  MTR showed an instant loss on all hops.  As soon as we hung up 
MTR instantly was able to ping all hops again.

     The same happened when we were on the low channels as well as the high. 
So the untested hypothesis which fits, given that the phones were adjusting 
their channels automatically, was that one neighbor on one side was low and 
the other neighbor on the other side was high.
