Help to customize grub titles

I have a computer that I use for testing/experimenting and have several 
OSes on it. On the boot selection screen grub2 has some titles for the 
entries that are not clear, and I don't like.
Now that there is no menu.lst is there any way to customize the titles 
of the distros on the boot menu? I have looked at the various grub files 
but none seem to have any place where I can customize the titles.
