should i be able to install tomcat and jboss versions of same SW?

i'm pretty sure i know the answer to this, but i'll ask, anyway.
theoretically, should i be able to simultaneously install two
different versions of the same SW deb file -- a tomcat version and a
corresponding jboss version?

note that this doesn't even get into whether i can *run* them at the
same time -- i'm just talking about *installing*. i just tried this
-- installed one version, then when installing the other version, got
a file conflict error related to (of all things) what is clearly a
*windows* executable file (package names and files have been removed
to protect the innocent):

  dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives ...
trying to overwrite '/opt/...exe', which is also in package ...

if i should be able to *run* both packages or (at the very least) run
either one depending on my mood, then it stands to reason i should be
able to install them both. so certainly, there should be no file
conflicts and, really, if this is a deb package, there shouldn't be
any windows executables in it anyway!

  does all that make sense?
