sound problems on reinstall of 10.4

Thanks for the advice on GRUB. Now I have a dual boot to XP but another problem that I'm facing is that I have no sound. First, in the bar at the top of my screen, the usual icon for the sound display isn't there. When I try to go to System/Preferences/sound, it does not open. Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP61

Audio Chipset:  Realtek ALC883 

and I have downloaded the driver from  Nvidia but I don't know how to proceed from there. I'd appreciate some advice on this. Thanks,
