'alternative'...or do you fancy subscribing to two ubuntu related lists?

Yes, but I think it is a bit of a stretch to call that kind of an 
environment a community. So the engagement between new ones and more 
experienced users shall be Ubuntu and naught else? I suppose you can 
send private emails...
