problems connecting thru iterm

Hi all,
I'm running a ubuntu server to which clients connect thru putty and iterm 
(apple mac osx). The putty clients are working fine with a terminal type xterm, 
but iterm clients are not able to use Fn keys, that are all perceived as an 
escape key. I've tried to set up the escape sequences (e.g., F2 = ^[ 12;2 ~) 
but it is not working. The exported terminal in the ssh session is xterm, but 
it seems the terminfo is not the right one. 
Any suggestion?
