I had no sound on 9.10 and solved it by removing pulseaudio by
sudo apt-get remove --purge pulseaudio
and installing gamix
sudo apt-get install gamix

I found I then had to open the mixer to get sound working, but only
had to do this once.
It is a fairly low risk operation I believe. It seems that pulseaudio
can be installed again if required. (I had it in and out several
times trying to analyse what was going on).
