Removing pulseaudio to avoide having to do the 9.10 to 9.04 upgrade; )

OK, so ive been fighting with sound on various Ubuntu 9.10 boxes (and
so have people I know) and someone mentioned if pulseaudio is removed
it is possible to get sound working.  I even ended up buying a small
USB dongle style soundcard and this only solves the problem on some
boxes.

So is there a decent howto on removing pulseaudio for 9.10, ive done
some googling and come up with various ideas but would like a tried
and tested solution specifically for Ununtu 9.10.
