Could Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) users install some packages in higher Ubuntu versions ?

You would either have to enable the backports repository in your
sources.list, or compile them yourself, or download the .deb files and
make sure to cover dependencies. If it broke the older libs, I would
have installed the new program into /opt/ and pointed everything in
there, but that might be too advanced.
