First, and always a good step when troubleshooting an app in Linux,
create a new user, log in as that user, and try firefox.  That will
confirm whether or not the program is running or not.  Assuming firefox
works well in a completely new user account, then enable your file
manager of choice to view hidden files, and look in your $Home (usually
/home/username) directory for the Mozilla configuration directory.
Should be .mozilla.  Rename it to something like mozilla-old, then start
Firefox again.  that way, you will be able to retrieve files from the
old config directory (likely the only thing you'll want is the bookmarks
file.)
