Beginner Q3: Is there a way of permanently unlocking the keyring?

I've never chose auto-login so I can't tell you :-)
That may prompt for your password once I suppose.
Changing your keyring password is slightly different depending on
which version you have, but either choose edit->preferences (Hardy +
newer) or on the passwords tab right click on the login folder and
choose change password at bottom (Karmic + ?)
Poke around, you should find it.
