Not true, what about tin and slrn, both excellent standalone news
readers? Tin is still developed and supported, the mailing list,
while not busy is still active and questions there get a prompt and
helpful response usually.
I know they're not GUI newsreaders but a GUI for what is essentially a
text mode exercise is not really necessary. Tin at least (not sure
about slrn) is mouse aware so you can select groups and messages with
the mouse, what more would a GUI offer?
