install ubuntu without deleting data

Oh nonsense. It's quite easy to reinstall directly without affecting
your /home folder, your /opt folder etc. As mentioned in other posts,
all you need to do is use manual partition, choose to not reformat, and
reinstall. Have a look at this thread:
