Calendar application with simple events list (not days, weeks or months) - any suggestions?

you can try lightening calendar.  integrates well with thunderbird and 
gives the "agenda" list right above which sounds like what you want.

    sudo apt-get install thunderbird (if you don't have the mail client)
    sudo apt-get install lightning-extension
