I used systemrescuecd and the dd command to backup my partitions to an 
external harddisk for quite some time, but found it a bit clumsy to use 
but it worked perfect.

Then I tried puppy, and found it was more userfriendly - it has dd and 
gparted and many other tools as well.

how to use puppy v. 4.00 with some screenshots.
