Software Installation in Hardy 8.04

Hi there,
I've just downloaded a whole host of software such as Clamav,
Peazip,Emule, Open Project,Templates and clipart for Open Office, Sun
PDF import extension etc...but I can't seem to install them through
synaptic or Deb package manager....pleas assist.
