No Audio out of HDMI on ATI Radion HD 4650 Video/Audio card

I have been trying to get audio to work out of the HDMI port on my HD 4650 card for two weeks without success.
I also posted a bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/501203 but no one has responded yet.

I'm new to linux and i'm trying to set up an HTPC using Myth. I installed the OS and realized I was not getting any sound.
I used to have a Windows based HTPC setup up on this same computer before but the hard drive died so I decided to rebuild using Ubuntu.
However, on Windows this setup worked without any problems so there's nothing wrong with my A/V receiver and the card is capable of transmitting Audio via HDMI.

On Ubuntu, I'm having a problem of now knowing how to diagnose an audio problem. I've looked at some of the documentation on the Ubuntu site and forums but the settings all appear to be correct on my system. The card is detected, the sound preferences shows the correct hard and HDMI port for audio output.
I keep trying different things but frankly I think I'm making the problem worst.

I tried installing the proprietary drivers because I read somewhere they are require to get HDMI audio working but when I installed them and did my first reboot, X would not start. Had to jump into recovery mode and uninstall.

I don't know if my problem is with Alsa, Pulse, the drivers, etc.

One thing I would hope to get from this email is if in fact the proprietary drivers are required to get audio over HDMI working. I hope not because as I mentioned earlier, I had problems setting it up.
If this is not the case, at least I can focus on trying to make this work with Alsa and Pulse.

Thanks
 Tito
