Sorry. You are right. I thought that "GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT" was the
wrong variable and that its default (whether you comment it out or
not) is 0.

I have just checked /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig and it is unset by default
so your solution must work.
