The default way to install linux is to have a pc with an internal 
harddisk and a cd read/write drive, which has worked flawlessly for me 
during the last several years, almost each half year I newinstall the 
latest ubuntu version (I use an external usb harddisk for my backups).

Using an external usb drive for installation is not the default way to 
start out for a newbie, I think.
