I my day job I babysit a handful of Linux servers used primarily for web
hosting. I don't ever recall any serious optimization recommendation that
even mentions defragging. At least with regard to Apache or MySQL. MySQL
especially is heavily disk IO bound.

Not really equating the two. Just observing that if disinformation exists at
that level, its certainly possible to happen in lesser situations.
