I’ve just installed Fontforge on a new computer (Ubuntu 9.10), using
Ubuntu Software Centre. It doesn’t launch from the menu, and it won’t
open existing Fontforge (.sfd) files.

Entering the command “fontforge” in a terminal produces the notice “Type
in your script file. Processing will not begin until all the script has
been input (ie. until you have pressed ^D).”

I’ve no idea what this means. Is it likely to be a Fontforge problem or
Ubuntu problem?
