40GB will take a while :-)

Also, assuming that the new ddrescue, an improvement of the old
dd_rescue, an extension of dd ;-) works like dd, then you should also
simply be able to mount the image file and traverse it just like any
other mounted filesystems.

mount /path/to/HDfile /path/to/mountpoint -o loop

That should work and should let you look inside the backup copy and
pull out files and directories...

Again, YMMV, but it may save you a bit of trouble if you can just step
into the image and locate the files you want and just copy them out
that way :-)

PS: mounting image files like that also works great for ISO images and
Floppy images.
