I just finished installing, then getting rid of, Kubuntu 10.10. I don't
have the world's fastest machine but it runs compiz just fine with all
effects enabled. Kwin on the other kept shutting desktop effects off
because presumably they were too big a drag on the system. Even without
effects enabled the speed reminded me of a P3. There are better
implementations of KDE out there, namely PCLinuxOS. Mepis is OK, but the
distribution release is based on Lenny, so the packages, while stable,
are pretty ancient.
