I've just done a new build, and according to my son the lucky recipient
it's all working most beautifully including the compiz cube thingy that
I never use. He was just running an urban trials cycling film for me:-

in 1080p mode and to me it looks every bit as good as broadcast TV on
his Samsung wide monitor.

The board I used is NOT integrated graphics but I thought it's as well
to let everybody else know of something good that works. It's the Asus
M4A79XTD EVO. I've gone for low energy consumption so I've only fitted
the Athlon II 240e but the performance is absolutely fine for his needs.
The graphics card is the Asus EAH4350 SILENT. Maverick recognises two
sound output channels - the analog channel on the motherboard and the
digital channel provided by the HDMI socket on the graphics card,
although we've only used the former.

I took advice given by this list and declined the invitation to install
proprietary graphics drivers.

I've fitted a 4GB kit of ECC memory from Crucial.
