I would personally suggest not installing the closed source fglrx 
driver, because it is unable to display xv video without tearing (you 
can see a split in the image during motion scenes where the top half is 
out of sync with the bottom half).  The only work around to that problem 
is to output your video to gl rather than XV, but that doesn't work well 
if you also have a 3d desktop enabled (Visual Effects enabled.)

Of course, others might have need to install the drivers for some other 
purpose that's more important to you them smooth video playback.
