unusual sound problem on my samsung r440

What happens if you power off completely, then reboot into Ubuntu?
Sounds like you have your sessions/settings being saved, when you
warm-reboot, and the other OS has difficulties with it. Do you have a
swap partition, for Linux, on your HD? Ric
