Lost some groups on my system

Hello Ubuntu users, I was trying to change the groups the git user (I
created for a git repository) belonged to. I thought I was changing which
groups that user belonged to but I ended up removing a lot of groups from my
system. Now I can't use sudo because one of the groups, admin, was deleted.
I made a temporary fix to that by enabling the root user account and using
it when needed. How can I restore to default? I thought that dpkg
--configure -a would do it, but it did not.
