You have 2 ways of finding out what is running on your system - by 
looking you may see the item which is causing you the problem:

look at System>Administration>System Monitor (equivalent to Windows 
(?)Program Manager)

or

you can go to a terminal and type "ps aux" (without the quotes) and you 
will all the running PIDs and who they belong to (Shift-PageUp/Pagedown 
to display everything on the screen).



Re the Startup Programs, mentioned in the earlier post, as the name 
implies these are applications which are automatically started when you 
login. Have a look at the HELP there which explains what Startup is all 
about.
