You've not mentioned exactly what happens when you attempt to boot with
the liveCD. I doubt that the USB path will help much. Perhaps you can
tell us what exactly happens when you attempt to boot from the liveCD,
and also provide specifics as to what the friend's hardware is -
including which graphic card the system uses, which particular liveCD
you used, and if the liveCD passes the liveCD tests provided by the main
menu?
