Well, my experience is somewhat different - but with the final result
that the Alpha3 now simply won't allow me to login (because it has a
seizure at the 'Ubuntu with the 5 dots', just before the login menu) :-( .
Here is what happened:
Using a 32-bit system with Gigabyte mobo and nVidia GeForce 6600 card.
Installation went OK and I even installed the #256 nVidia driver using
the System>Administration>Hardware Drivers. Rebooted and everything was
fine - no problems with the video. (Turned off all the compiz doo-das as
I have no need for them.)
Even installed some of usual "after installation" installations like mc
(midnight commander), Thunderbird and kaffeine. Everything fine.
However, the Synaptic Package Manager and Update Manager was telling me
that there were 289 upgrades being withheld.
I also noticed that on the top panel the "Error" icon was showing - so I
go to it and it shows me that there was an error in upgrading something
or other and do I want to send a report- I reply: "Yes". I then get the
message that the error report reporter crashed - do I want to report
this error, I say "Yes" and I then get the message that the error report
reporter crashed, do I want to report the error. This went on for
several attempts after which I gave up and exited.
Seeing that there were 289 upgrades being held back I decided to go the
apt-get way from the command line and see what would happen - which I
did, and had the 289 upgrades done.
I rebooted - all fine.
The top panel was still showing that there were errors so I went to see
what they were (I was a bit less stupid by this stage :-) ). The message
was that I had 3 old versions of files installed and that I should
upgrade them. The files were (and this agrees with what you show in your
list but for different reasons I suspect):
* gir1.0-freedesktop
* gir1.0-glib-2.0
* python-gobject
Now, I think to myself, this is a brand new, untouched by human hands,
installation of Alpha3, not an upgrade from Alpah2, so why should I have
3 old versions of these files installed? Never mind, Ubuntu is telling
me that this is so and therefore it must be so....
I go to Synaptic Package Manager and upgrade these packages. Done.
Now I reboot,...........and the wheels fall off :-( . I get to the
Ubuntu-whatever immediately before the login menu and this is where
Alpha3 has a hernia and "stops, short, never to go again....".
I'll see tomorrow if I have the courage to spend another several hours
trying to install a working version of Alpha3....
But at this stage, Alpha3 has a serious problem :-( .

Don't resent getting old - a great many are denied the privelege.
