Converting ext3 to ext4 resulting in loss of data?

Does the installer even offer the option to upgrade an ext3 partition to 
ext4 ? I thought there only options where to leave a partition as is 
(either mounted or not) or to repartition as a given filesystem type ? I 
might be wrong but my bet is you did (unknowingly) ask it to reformat 
the partition....
